“It doesn’t hurt to read”

That you were my first love

was just dumb luck, a technicality

you were ahead of me

that you were my first love

was just dumb, dumb, stupid luck, a technicality

you will always be ahead of me

why’d I have to, practice on you

why’d I have to, practice on your heart….

Oh.

If you have anyone those lyrics can attach themselves to, you’ll get just how beautiful they are in their simplicity.

Props if you know who wrote the lyrics too. Hint, they’re only in the live version.

  1. Good ol’ John Mayer.

Just took these lyrics and spun them into one of my songs…

    It was great.

  2. If greatness is measured in music tastes, I’m sure you’re well on your way to the hall of fame my friend.

  3. The live version is the best there is.
I’ve always loved that song, but the line “that you were my first love, is just dumb luck” has made it become my favorite song of John’s. It’s so simple, but so heartbreaking.

  4. I keep telling my friend the live version is the definitive one. He insists on the EP version.

It might be one of those lines you appreciate more if you feel you’ve been there and felt that in a relationship.
