Calculators were highly prejudicial towards Personal Computers when they first started coming out of the laboratory. They were seen to be communing with letters and punctuation in a way that was seen as “incalculable.” This was a time when being PC was actually deemed an offense.
Thus the term “Alphabet Bandit” gained prominence in the calculator community as a way of disparaging the Personal Computers’ processing style choices. Thankfully there is more tolerance of diversity in electronic society these days, although some pocket calculators, out of immaturity, still use the term Alphabet Bandit in a colloquial setting as a way of hassling their fellow pocket calculator friends.
Oh won’t you please, give PCs a chance.
